Australia does not participate in the AFF Cup 2020

Earlier this year, Southeast Asian media reported that Australia football will participate in the AFF Cup 2020. In fact, since being a member of the Southeast Asian Football Federation, Australia has not participated in regional tournaments at the national level.

They only participate in young tournaments (U level) such as U15 Southeast Asia, U19 Southeast Asia. Under this possibility, Siam Sports page of Thailand also enthusiastically offered the opinion. “Australia will be a strong candidate if participating in the AFF Cup 2020 ”.

Thus, the AFF Cup 2020 will still have the participation of familiar teams in Southeast Asia. Reportedly, the tournament will start in October with qualifying for weak teams like Timor Leste, Brune. After that, e group stage takes place at the end of November.

Compared to the AFF Cup 2018, it would be more difficult for some Southeast Asian teams. Especially, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia … towards the AFF Cup 2020. Specifically, they only had a short time to enter the AFF Cup 2020.

After having completed the matches in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, they would enter the match. The AFF Cup delayed the matches from March to June to the end of the year. This was due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the context of many major tournaments in the world changing the schedule, the Southeast Asian Football Federation announced the AFF Cup 2020 starting in October, causing many teams to worry, for fear of overlapping World Cup qualifying schedule.
